Alpenglow: What It Is and Why You Don’t Want to Miss It
We recently learned the meaning of this fun word, and we just had to share it with you! If you live near a mountain range, you may have already experienced it, but if you are like us, you had no idea this phenomenon had its own name! If partaking in alpenglow isn’t already on your bucket list, we’re pretty sure it will be if you keep reading!
So what is alpenglow?
According to Wikipedia, alpenglow is a German word for “Alps glow” and describes a reddish glow on the horizon opposite of the sun, appearing when the sun is just below the horizon. This occurs in the west just before sunrise and in the east about 5-8 minutes before sunset. In short, the mountains in the east take on an incredible pink glow just before the sun slips below the western horizon.
Alpenglow is actually pretty well-known here in The Grand Canyon State, especially in Tucson, where the Santa Catalina mountains glow an intense shade of pink most evenings. Although, you won’t likely hear the term “alpenglow” from the locals. You’ll most likely hear, “when the mountains turn pink, it’s time to drink!” That’s definitely more of our style.
The alpenglow, or “pink mountains,” effect is especially intense in the late fall and winter months. This is because the glowing color happens when the sun’s light reflects off air-born precipitation, like ice crystals, hanging out in the evening sky. This is much more common in the cooler and damper months of October through February than in the warmer, dryer months of the year. So, add alpenglow to your growing list of reasons to visit Tucson in the winter!
Where to See Alpenglow in Tucson

Linda Vista Trailhead - If you want to enjoy alpenglow up close, Linda Vista trailhead is right off N Oracle Rd, where it crosses E Linda Vista Rd. The trailhead is easy to find and offers up-close views of the pink mountains, glowing saguaro, and cholla and is close enough to plenty of places to eat and drink, you won’t have to go far for dinner. Just don’t wander too far without a flashlight! Once the sun dips below the horizon, the light falls fast on the trail!
Catalina State Park - A must-see for anyone visiting Tucson, Catalina State Park is full of scenic drives and trailheads, a great visitors center, and endless mountain views. Get there early to stop at the Ranger Station before they close at 5:00, then drive up to the Southerland Trailhead and stop anywhere the mood strikes you. You can’t go wrong.
Honeybee Canyon - On the northern side of Oro Valley, Honeybee Canyon Park is easy to find and boasts beautiful sweeping views of the mountains. Head north on N Rancho Vistoso Blvd until you reach the park.
